AMBASSADOR UNGENT DRAAF

A distinguished career diplomat, Ungent stands about two meters tall and his purplish exoskeleton is roughly humanoid — leaving aside his webbed hands and feet, as well as his eye stalks. He favors satiny clothing in lavender and indigo and is shod in matching leather clogs.

Despite his colorful appearance, Ungent is a deeply serious observer of interstellar societies and the conflicting forces that drive both their highest aspirations and deepest, destructive acts. A devotee of fine dining, he also has a keen appreciation for artistic achievement, especially as an expression of the “soul” of civilization. As Probability Shadow begins, Ungent is just arriving on resource-rich Bledraun. A sudden shortage of essential rare minerals has brought every interstellar power broker to the planet for a trade conference.

The day of the conference, Ungent learns of plots by The Terran Protectorate and the ANN Commission to hijack Bledraun’s mining system. Next, news arrives that the murderous Quishiks have appeared near the Fremdel event horizon. The danger mounting, Ungent ignores calls for him to return home. Instead, he searches for clues in the streets of Bledraun’s capital city. Pursued by government officials, he hides in a secret network of tunnels under Bledraun. There he meets Dlalamphrur, the AI caretaker of an abandoned Ootray city.
